August 1, 1022: Please go to the "Recent News" setting to read an important announcement about our non-profit organization. Sadly, we have decided that it is time to dissolve our organization and we have distributed all of our remaining funds to various animal non-profits that we have supported throughout the years.
June, 2022: CASCADES HUMANE SOCIETY, $5,000.00. Thanks to the Samuel Higby Camp Foundation,
Friends Of The Animals applied for and received a grant of $5,000 for the spay/neuter program at Cascades Humane Society. This grant will be of great help in preventing unwanted pregnancies in felines in the Jackson County area.
FEBRUARY 2022: CASCADES HUMANE SOCIETY, $5,000.00. "FORGOTTEN FELINES" is a program that is run through the shelter by wonderful volunteers. The purpose is to raise money by selling catnip toys and other goods to help fund more spay/neuter clinics at the shelter for feral cats. Due to Covid-19, many of their fundraising activities, such as craft shows, were cancelled so raising money was more difficult. Friends donated $5,000.00 to help refill their depleting funds and support this worthy program.
FEBRUARY 2022: CASCADES HUMANE SOCIETY, $1,000.00. Friends agreed to pay the cost of necessary vaccines and other shots for the 100 feral cats that were spayed or neutered during their last campaign at the shelter. While it is great that these cats can be released back to their colonies ("feral" cats are more wild than domesticated cats, therefore less likely to be adopted) after being sterilized, it is important that they be protected from feline illnesses. These shots have been a big help in keeping the cat colonies healthy as well.
JANUARY, 2022: CASCADES HUMANE SOCIETY, $1,040.00. Thanks again to the Samuel Higby and Margaret H. Camp Foundation, Friends was able to sponsor free adoptions of cats or dogs to Jackson County veterans during the months of Nov. and Dec., 2021 - the same time as the program was running at the Jackson County Animal Shelter. Two puppies, one kitten and one full grown cat all found forever homes with a veteran during this campaign at the humane society. We wish all of the animals and the veterans who participated in our Pets For Veterans program many, many years of making memories and enjoying each others company throughout the coming years.
JANUARY, 2022: JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, $1,880.00. Friends sponsored another Pets For Veterans campaign during the months of November and December, 2021, utilizing more of the money we had received from the Samuel Higby & Margaret H. Camp Foundation. Thanks to this wonderful grant, the animal shelter found homes for three cats and eight dogs with their fees being covered, so they could start their new lives in Jackson County with a deserving veteran and their families.

JUNE, 2021: CASCADES HUMANE SOCIETY, $5,000.00. We'd like to thank the Samuel Higby Camp Foundation for their generous grant of $5,000 which we were able to gift to "The Forgotten Feline Program" at the Cascades Humane Society. The money will be used to pay for spay/neuter of many, many feral cats to help keep the population down so fewer feral (wild/homeless) cats will be in the Jackson Community. This is a very important program for the Jackson area and this grant from the Samuel Higby Camp Foundation will help immensely.
FEBRUARY 13, 2021: EQUESTRIA HORSE RESCUE AND SANCTUARY, $3,000.00. The weather has been harsh this winter and caring for horses takes on more challenges. A couple of horses have needed medical attention and veterinarian bills started to pile up for the nonprofit. Friends has now covered all of these necessary bills so the sanctuary could continue to give the best medical care to these special animals. They also used some donation money to purchase special buckets for drinking water that are heated so the horses can continue to remain healthy during this cold season. With the assist of warm horse blankets that Friends previously paid for and the use of heaters in the barn and plenty of TLC, the rescue horses and doing well.
NOVEMBER 15, 2020: EQUESTRIA HORSE RESCUE AND SANCTUARY, $2,000.00. This donation is being used to continue funding of providing food for horses and it also was used for another purpose. In the winter, it can get quite cold for the horses and winter horse blankets are a very important part of keeping them warm and healthy. Many times blankets are mended over and over by the caregivers, but sometimes they need to buy new ones, which can be quite expensive. A local horse rescue that Equestria works with had a tragic barn fire this Fall where they lost all of their provisions such as food, as well as blankets. Through Equestria we have helped finance the purchase of hay and feed for these rescue horses as well as another essential. While they work on building a new barn, the horses need to be kept warm so we financed the purchase of 10 warm, winter horse blankets for the rescue horses in their care. In the near future we hope to have some photos of the horses with their warm, new blankets, but for now it might be fun for you to know the names of the horses who have already received them: Paige, Gunner, Melody, Chance, Tachoma, Breeze, Shadow, Dixie, Riley and Thunder. :)
NOVEMBER 2, 2020: $2,000.00 to help feed local animals in need. Thanks to one of our generous donors, who wishes to remain anonymous, Friends has been able to honor their request of financing the purchase of food for needy animals in the Jackson area with their kind donation. Since "Friends" can only donate to other nonprofits or government agencies (like the county animal shelter) with our donors blessing, we divided their donation into three separate categories. We recognized that especially during these difficult times with the pandemic in full swing, having food available for pets as well as homeless animals is very helpful. The following is how we distributed this gift to other nonprofits and what it will be used for:
EQUESTRIA HORSE RESCUE AND SANCTUARY, $675.00: Hay and feed for horses can be quite costly, especially in the winter months when it isn't as widely available. Equestria's sanctuary has a number of horses in their care that had been rescued in one way or another. They also keep in contact with other rescues as well as isolated cases where individuals need assistance for their horses so the money we provided will be used for feed for horses in the Jackson area.
PAWS, $650.00: This nonprofit cares for many colonies of feral cats which can get quite expensive to feed for the caretakers. A portion of the money went to supply food for the feral cats as well as some going into a food pantry at an animal shelter.
JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, $675.00: JCAS animal control officers provide a great service to our community. They rescue animals in trouble, they investigate abuse situations, capture lost animals so they can be reunited with their families, and so much more. During their rounds, they do get to know the public and they want to help in any way they can when it comes to the animals. JCAS does have a food pantry for people to get food for their pets if they come into hard times, but some people are unable to get to the shelter due to health issues, or even for lack of transportation. Friends became aware that JCAS helps these shut-ins that need assistance with food for their animals when they can, so we decided to give this money to the shelter. It is to be used exclusively by the two officers to be used at their discretion, by providing pet food to needy families. We're pleased we can partner with them and help make things a little easier for those who are unable to come to the food pantry on their own.
JANUARY 10, 2020: COUNTRY GARDENS VETERINARY CLINIC WILDLIFE REHAB, $8,035.50.
The nonprofit CGVC Wildlife Rehab (run by Country Gardens Vet Clinic) has been trying to raise money to build an outdoor Avian Flight Cage for many years. The purpose of the flight cage is to provide shelter and care for birds treated at the clinic while recovering from their injuries. Friends had donated money on two previous occasions for a total of $2,711.00, but they were having difficulty raising more to start the project. Thanks to the money we raised in our 2019 bowling event, we were able to pay the remainder of the cost of the flight cage, bringing the total of our donation to $10,746.50. Final construction is still taking place but all should be completed by early spring 2020. October 22, 2020: Please see the photos of this structure that were added to our "PHOTO" section on this website.
JANUARY, 2020: CASCADES HUMANE SOCIETY, $875.00. In November we sponsored a month-long Pets For Veterans Campaign. Three dogs, three kittens, three cats and one puppy found new homes. We are happy that we could help local veterans find new best friends.
DECEMBER, 2019: JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, $325.00. Friends partnered with JCAS and Bissell Vacuum Co. to sponsor dogs and cats for adoption in their December event. We're pleased to announce that we shared in the cost of nine cats and four dogs which found homes during this event.
NOVEMBER 29, 2019: CASCADES HUMANE SOCIETY, $1,080.00. In August we partnered with CHS when they sponsored a spay/neuter day for local rescue groups. (Just listing it now as we recently received the invoice.) This novel idea was wonderful as Jackson County is fortunate to have many small rescue groups who take in homeless cats and dogs but need assistance in having them sterilized before they can be adopted by a loving person or family. CHS offered a spay/neuter day where they had veterinarians come in to assist with spay/neuters of animals from these local rescue groups. "Friends" contributed to the cost of this event and we are pleased it was such a big success. We'd also like to say thank you to all the local rescue groups who have been so important to our community and the homeless animals.
OCTOBER, 2019: JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, $1,000.00. Sometimes animals come into shelters that are harder to adopt as they may have special needs. While perfectly wonderful pets, they may be overlooked and spend more time at a shelter than these precious furries need to be. Recently JCAS asked if Friends would kindly sponsor 10 of these special needs dogs again as they hoped they would find loving homes soon. We donated $100 towards each of 10 of their harder to adopt dogs and we're pleased to announce that each one was adopted into a permanent home. Every animal, with special needs or not, can fill a family home with love and companionship. Please visit an animal shelter whenever you are considering adding a new best friend to your family. We're sure you'll find just the right one...or two... that would love to be a part of your family.
AUGUST, 2019: CASCADES HUMANE SOCIETY, $3,500.00. It was our pleasure to be able to donate money to be used for new medical equipment for the animal shelter. Of this donation, $797.00 went to purchase an "Operating Otoscope/Opthalmoscope" kit, a "Tri-Star Surgery Exam Light" at the cost of $1,654.00, a "Cat Scale" for $89.97, a multi-function "Microhematocrit Centrifuge" for $502.00 and last but not least, an additional $307.00 to go towards an eye surgery for one of their furry residents. A portion of this money was raised thanks in a big part to CHS employee Karen G. who attends our annual bowling event and acquired some lane sponsors as well as pledges from a large number of her family and friends. We are pleased that we were able to add to her donations to assist Karen and the other medical staff at CHS.
AUGUST, 2019: EQUESTRIA HORSE RESCUE AND SANCTUARY, $2,500.00 Planning ahead for feed for winter is very important. Friends donated $1,500 to ensure the sanctuary would have enough money to purchase feed to last the winter. In addition to feed costs, vet bills tend to add up when new horses come to live at the sanctuary. One of the horses that we recently saved by sponsoring them, arrived with malnutrition and other medical problems. Thanks to Equestria and their quick action, she is now being treated for these conditions and doing well. Friends donated an additional $1,000 to help cover the vet bills.
JULY, 2019: JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, $4,200.00+ Improvements to the shelter puppy room had been on our agenda for a while, and finally we were able to schedule installation of new windows in this area. These windows are furnished with screens, just like the ones we had installed in the Cat Habitat, so on beautiful days they can be opened and the puppies can enjoy the fresh air.
JUNE,2019: JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER $1,950.00. We recently concluded our 8th Pets For Veterans Campaign- this time with the financial assistance of The Samuel Higby & Margaret H. Camp Fund. Five cats, three small dogs or puppies, and seven medium to large dogs went home with Jackson County veterans at no cost. Thank you to those who awarded Friends this financial grant and thank you to our local heroes for your service to our country. We wish you many, many years of happiness with your new, furry best friend.
JUNE, 2019: JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, $1,000.00. Sometimes animals come to the shelter that have special needs and it may take longer for them to be adopted by a new family. While they are well cared for while there, it is best for all of the animals to be out of a shelter environment and into a loving home as soon as possible. With this in mind, we sponsored a portion of the adoption fee for ten of their special needs, adult dogs so potential families may take a second look and realize they may be a perfect fit for them. We are pleased to announce that all ten of these dogs were adopted into permanent homes in less than a month! It has also come to our attention that in two of these cases a kind, anonymous donor paid the balance of the adoption fee ($50) to allow the special needs dog to get a new start with their adopter for free. Friends would like to extend a thank you to those who also gave money to JCAS to help give these dogs a better chance to find a new home.
JUNE, 2019: EQUESTRIA HORSE RESCUE AND SANCTUARY, $1,300.00. "Friends" sees the need of assisting a diverse group of nonprofits as they do their wonderful work of rescue and care for animals in need. Equestria recently requested that we help them buy two horses that had been destined for an unpleasant fate. We obliged and paid this fee to free these two precious, velvet-nosed horses that will be able to live their natural lives out in the safety and compassionate care of Equestria Horse Rescue and Sanctuary which is located in Jackson County. NOVEMBER 22, 2019: While the photo is a little dark, we just added a picture of Moon and Shadow in the horse trailer on their way to their new home at Equestria.
NOTE: Our most recent fundraiser was our annual bowling event on April 27th. More 2019 donations (to include at least one pending to The Cascades Humane Society) from the bowling event, will be posted above in the near future.
February, 2019: BARKLEY AND LULU COUNCIL FOR ANIMAL WELFARE, $1,500.00. In conjunction with The Jackson Cat Project, this local non profit organization specializes in providing spay/neuters on cats for owners who can not afford it on their own. They also assist in the cost of special surgeries for animals in need.
August, 2018: JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, $3,000.00. Friends wants to continue to help with the funding of spay/neuter of felines to help keep the population of unwanted animals down in the Jackson area. We have been contributing to this fund for several years and already the positive impact has been felt at the shelter. Numbers of feral cats are down from previous years and we hope this trend can continue with our support.
August, 2018: CASCADES HUMANE SOCIETY. $6,579.00. CHS plans to install outdoor puppy runs to be used as a way to keep puppies or other immune compromised dogs away from the rest of the population while still being able to enjoy the outdoors. Fresh air is very important for shelter animals so with the installation of a concrete base and separate fenced in kennels, they will be able to accomplish this plan.
August, 2018: PAWS, $3,000.00. As a nonprofit that supports the Jackson County Animal Shelter, Friends can donate money to be used to purchase medicines for the animals that would ordinarily not be provided by the county. It is very common for dogs to arrive at the shelter that are heartworm positive and it is very expensive to treat them. With this funding, Dr. Cathy Anderson, the veterinarian at JCAS, can treat and cure these dogs to make them ready for adoption into loving homes. Our funding gives her the freedom to also purchase other medicines that may be needed on a case by case basis. (Dr. Anderson is a board member of PAWS and she can purchase these medicines directly from the pharmaceutical companies as she is a licensed veterinarian.)
July, 2018: HELP4WILDLIFE, $300.00. This is a nonprofit organization that assists wildlife in the Jackson area. Their main focus is rehabilitation and care of injured and/or orphaned animals. This donation will help with food and medical care and assist animals such as rabbits, raccoons and baby fawns.
June, 2018: COUNTRY GARDENS WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, $500.00. This nonprofit is tied in with Country Gardens Veterinary Clinic and they are planning on building an outdoor flight cage to temporarily house wild birds that have been in need of medical care. This money has been sent to go into their fund to start building the bird cage as well as another one for smaller, wild mammals.
June, 2018: EQUESTRIA HORSE RESCUE AND SANCTUARY, $500.00 Feeding the horses who reside at the sanctuary while waiting for new homes can be quite expensive. The sanctuary has recently been able to acquire some land to plant and grow hay for feed and they also need equipment to help harvest it. Friends donated $500 to help them with expenses as they work on providing fresh hay for their horses.
June, 2018: JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, Just over $110,000.00. If you have just learned about our organization or are new to our website, you may not be aware of the very exciting donation we have made to the Jackson County Animal Shelter that was completed in May. Thanks to a very generous donation by longtime Jackson resident Mary Flannery, who passed away a few years ago, we received enough money to put an addition on to our local shelter! (Also, Mrs. Flannery donated a near equal amount to the Cascades Humane Society upon her passing.) It took a lot of planning and meetings with Jackson Commissioners as well as legal papers and agreements to be signed, but all of that preparation is behind us now. Our donation is a state-of-the-art "Cat Habitat" which is a fantastic place for shelter cats to reside as they await their new, permanent homes. Friends hired "Cunningham Construction", a well-known and respected construction company located here in Jackson, to manage this build and we're very pleased with the finished product. Please click the "Cat Habitat Photos" tab above to see in-progress photos of our construction as well as photos from our grand opening which was on May 19th. Do stop by the Jackson County Animal Shelter on Spring Arbor Rd. (across from Lumen Christi High School) and tour their new Cat Habitat as well as visit all the animals awaiting forever homes at the shelter! You'll be glad that you did.
February, 2018: CASCADES HUMANE SOCIETY, $200.00. Educational materials were purchased at the request of Cascades Humane Society to help them illustrate how to read behaviors in cats and dogs. These materials will be very helpful as they educate children on the care and love of animals.
November, 2017: JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, $745.00. "Kuranda" beds are a well-known brand of heavy-duty, cot-like structure used by shelters and private individuals for the comfort and care of dogs and cats. In the past, Friends purchased many beds for dogs (as well as cats) which had PVC pipe for the framework. It has been noted that some of the dogs want to chew on the frames so Kuranda has now designed replacement frame parts that are made of aluminum. They are a bit pricey but the dogs aren't interested in chewing them so we purchased new frames for 17 shelter dog beds.
October, 2017: EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS FOR CHILDREN, $112.00. Educating young people on the care and love of animals is very important. It not only helps to enrich their lives by teaching them how wonderful animals can be, but it also teaches them respect for these special non-humans. Friends has purchased educational materials to be handed out to school children when they participate in programs held at the Jackson County Animal Shelter.
OCTOBER, 2017: EQUESTRIA HORSE RESCUE AND SANCTUARY, $1,500. Some of the proceeds from the Sept. golf outing were donated to this wonderful, local nonprofit that cares for homeless and/or formerly abused horses. This money will be used to purchase hay to feed the horses this winter.
JULY, 2017: CASCADES HUMANE SOCIETY, $5,100. Money raised in our annual bowling event this past May was donated to CHS for multiple uses at their shelter- $1,000 will be used for a new computer for their surgery area, $2,000 will be used for a second fence around the perimeter of an outdoor kennel (as recommended by the Dept. of Agriculture), and the remainder will go towards heartworm medication for heartworm positive dogs in their care. Thank you to the bowlers, volunteers, and contributors for any contributions made to this annual event! (The remainder of the bowling money will be used to help fund the Cat Habitat.)
APRIL, 2017: JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER. It has taken a while for completion (due to various hold-ups with extra, electrical power needed, etc.) but now JCAS is the proud owner of a reconditioned commercial dryer and washing machine for their laundry room! (The dryer had been installed quite a while ago.) This is wonderful news as residential-style machines, as used in the past, just can't keep up with the large loads of laundry done daily to keep the animals healthy and happy. Thanks to M. O'Keefe (spouse of a Friends board member) and the generosity of a very special anonymous donor, both of these machines are now in the facility at a value of $6,500.00.
MAR., 2017: CASCADES HUMANE SOCIETY, $1,000. Thanks to money raised from the 3rd annual golf outing last September, $1,000.00 has been donated to CHS which is to be used for heartworm medicine. Homeless dogs often come into CHS as well as the Jackson County Animal Shelter that have heartworm disease due to not getting preventative medicine by a human. While it is an expensive, and long process to cure these special animals, thankfully it can be done with medicines and lots of TLC. Friends is pleased that we can help with this financial aid for the heartworm positive dogs both at CHS and from similar donations to the Jackson County Animal Shelter.
OCT., 2016: JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, $1,381.00. Friends paid for the adoption of 10 dogs and 3 cats during our Pets For Veterans campaign (July-Aug). Please go to our "Photos" section if you would like to see some photos of the veterans and their new best friends.
OCT., 2016: PAWS, $419.00. Our summer Pets For Veterans campaign allotted $1,800 for adoptions and our board had decided that any money not used in that fund would go to PAWS to purchase medicines for the animals at the Jackson County Animal Shelter. For more details on this nonprofit organization, please read the section below under the golf outing donations.
OCT., 2016: WILDSIDE ANIMAL RESCUE/SANCTUARY, $500.00. It is extremely important for children to learn how to love and respect animals and Wildside is a rescue group that invites groups of young people in to learn about their animals. They requested funding for education materials so Friends has been happy to make this donation for their ongoing educational program.
OCT., 2016: PIXIES ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY (PAWS), $3,000.00. PAWS is a nonprofit run by Dr. Cathy Anderson from the Jackson County Animal Shelter. With this money she is able to purchase medicines for the shelter animals that would otherwise not be covered by county funds. Friends set up this fund several years ago and has been adding money to it on a regular basis to help treat the homeless animals that come to the shelter with medical issues. This fund has saved the lives of countless animals and they have been able to be treated, cured, and adopted thanks to our funding and the TLC given to these animals by Dr. Anderson and her staff.
OCT., 2016: JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, $1,000.00. This money from the golf outing was added to our special spay/neuter fund set up at the local shelter.
OCT., 2016: LOVE FROM LOUIE, $1,000.00. Love From Louie is a local nonprofit that specializes in the care and treatment of injured and special needs animals. Their dedicated volunteers offer plenty of TLC to help them on their recovery and this funding is needed to help pay for the medical portion of their care.
JUNE 2016: CASCADES HUMANE SOCIETY, $2,466.00. While the Cascades Humane Society has a wonderful outdoor play area (dog park) for use of the local community, they wanted to have a large fenced-in outdoor run exclusively for their canine friends. With this money they will be able to purchase and install fencing (in addition to repairing some old) close to their building where their furry residents can run and play.
JUNE 2016: COUNTRY GARDENS WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, $350.00. While they continue to search for further funding for their future outdoor wildlife shelters (we donated some money towards this venture in Dec., 2015) CGVC Wildlife Rehab. is still taking care of small wildlife. Friends donated this money to help them purchase supplies such as special food, paper towels, medical supplies, etc.
JUNE 2016: PAWS PET RESCUE, $2,000.00. PAWS is a non-profit organization, run in part by Dr. Cathy Anderson from the Jackson County Animal Shelter. She and her board members work tirelessly to help our local animal shelter by providing medicine, money for special surgeries money for lab tests as well as occasional foster care. Friends is delighted that we can help support this organization by supplementing the money they already donate for these special needs. Our $2,000.00 will be used to help pay for special surgeries and laboratory tests for Jackson County Animal Shelter animals that otherwise could not be treated. The county shelter has a bare-bones budget so it takes extra funding such as this to help countless deserving animals. Many happy stories of corrective surgery and/or special treatments have come out of this program with animals eventually being adopted into loving homes.
JUNE 2016: JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, $2,000.00. Friends has established a special fund to help pay for the sterilization of animals in extenuating circumstances. Feral cats are a good example of how this funding is used.
JUNE 2016: JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, $1,322.00. JCAS was in need of a new animal scale. An accurate scale is important as it is essential to know the exact weight of the animals for treatments, medications and surgery. Friends paid $662.00 for a new scale. The shelter also needed a laboratory grade microscope to help identify cysts, parasites and other microorganisms on animals brought to the shelter. This new microscope will be replacing an older, lower power microscope. The new one will help to increase staff efficiency and thus decrease JCAS expenses. The cost of the new microscope is $660.00.
JUNE 2016: EQUESTRIA HORSE RESCUE & SANCTUARY, $1,350.00. Friends donated $1,000.00 to the horse sanctuary to buy grain to feed their rescued horses all summer. We also paid $350.00 for a round hay bale horse feeder which will conserve hay and thus save money on feed.
APRIL 2016: JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, $6,365.00. A custom order has been made for stainless steel gates and fencing to update the puppy room at the shelter. The addition of these new gates will make it easier for the staff to clean and help make the environment for the puppies housed there more sanitary as well as ensure their safety by closing up any possible escape routes. The goal of the animal shelter is to keep all of their animals happy and healthy as they await their forever homes. If you are looking to add a new furry member to your family, please do go to our local animal shelter (located across the street from Lumen Christi High School) and visit with the staff and all of the wonderful animals housed there. Money from the 2015 golf outing was used to pay for these improvements.
SPRING 2016: Jackson County Animal Shelter, $114.00. Shelter personnel requested a new, light weight vacuum cleaner with an extra hose that could be used to reach high level cleaning as well as to be able to get behind the animal cages.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
December 2015: CGVC Wildlife Rehab, $3,000.00. Treating, caring for and housing wildlife requires a special license as well as knowledge of how to do this properly. Friends has donated $3,000 to this nonprofit organization (located at 2310 Brooklyn Rd.) so they can purchase an incubator to house sick or orphaned wildlife and to use towards supplies in construction of an outdoor shelter. They plan to build one shelter for small birds and mammals as well as a larger outdoor flight case to house and rehabilitate larger birds/raptors longer term. Jackson County is fortunate to have this wonderful organization available to care for our injured or orphaned wildlife and we are pleased to be able to assist them financially.
November 2015: Equestria Horse Rescue & Sanctuary, Inc., $3,000.00. The cost just for hay and feed for the precious horses at the Equestria Horse Sanctuary in Jackson is around $750.00. Friends wanted to pay this expense to provide food for the horses in their care this winter.
November 2015: Cascades Humane Society, $3,000.00. Friends has donated $2,000.00 to help pay the spay/neuter costs for a large number of cats that were rescued in the Napoleon area. We also have given them $1,000.00 to be used in a special fund that will pay for emergency or unusual surgeries of animals in their care. Every rescued animal needs the opportunity to be healthy and happy and the Friends are happy that we can help finance the good work that CHS has been doing to make this possible.
November 2015: PAWS Pet Rescue, $3,000.00. Continuing the need for funding for special or unusual surgeries of animals in the care of the Jackson County Animal Shelter, Friends has donated $2,000 to PAWS. They have paid for many surgeries with limited funding so we are donating money to PAWS to assist these financial needs. This month alone they have paid for biopsies on several dogs that came into the shelter with medical issues. After the results are found, this money can be used to provide treatments and cures for these special needs animals as they are waiting and hoping to find a new home. We have also donated $1,000 to be used for the purchase of a new pneumatic and standard otoscope at the cost of $575. This medical instrument will let the shelter's veterinarian examine the eyes and ears of their furry residents with better accuracy. The money left over from the scope purchase will be placed into our ongoing "medicine fund" which supplies money for the purchase of medicines that otherwise would not be provided by the county. Countless dogs and cats have been treated with medicines provided by our funding and The Friends are very thankful that we have the money from fundraising events to make this possible.
November 2015: Barkley and LuLu Council For Animal Welfare, $1,000.00. Due to our coordinator retiring, after 12 years of running Craft-A-Rama for the animals, a new non-profit organization has now agreed to take over the event. We're pleased to announce that The Jackson Junior Welfare League will take over the event in 2016. (NOTE: The event turned out to be more work than they expected so they decided not to continue as sponsors of Craft-A-Rama after 2015. The event is back to our coordinator as of the 2017 show.)They have promised not to make any changes in how the successful event has been run, so we are very happy with the turn of events. Many of their members volunteered for our 2015 event, to get their feet wet so-to-speak (!) and so Friends would like to honor them and their wonderful organization by making a donation in their name. Since we can only donate to other non-profit animal groups and government agencies that help animals, our JJWL donation will be going to the Barkley and LuLu animal organization. (You can read more about them in the Oct. entry below.)
October 2015: Jackson County Animal Shelter, $3,263.00. Thanks to our recent golf outing (expertly organized and coordinated by volunteers Brenda L. and Denise B.) a shipment of "Kuranda" brand beds has been delivered to our local shelter. These beds are especially made for shelter animals to keep them up off the floor and comfy in a soft bed. With the addition of towels or comforters (many made and donated by members of The Pieces and Patches Quilt Guild of Jackson), they can rest comfortably as they wait to be chosen by loving families. Because of this fundraiser, we were able to purchase beds for a total of 68 dogs and cats at the shelter.
October 2015: Barkley and LuLu Council For Animal Welfare, $3,000.00. This nonprofit organization does a stellar job helping to curb the population of unwanted animals by providing spay/neuter assistance for cats and dogs. They also can use this money to help fund special surgeries that may be needed on these animals, which otherwise might not be able to take place. Money generated from the golf outing was used to fund this as well.
September 2015: Police dog vest, $1,485.00. Friends had been contacted by a local police force, asking if we could finance the purchase of a custom-made protective vest for their working police dog. While the police dog wasn't a typical furry one in need, we felt that he deserved the best protection available while he tirelessly worked with his officer partner to help in our community. We hope to get a photo of him once it has been made so we can share with our supporters as well.
July 2015: Pets For Veterans, $1,200.00 allowed for funding. In July we ran another Pets For Veterans program at our local county shelter. During designated weeks of the year, we offer free adoptions of one dog or up to two cats at the county shelter for any qualified veteran. During this two-week campaign we were able to provide homes for 9 dogs and 3 cats. We wish our local veterans and their new best friends a wonderful time as they begin their new lives together!
June 2015: Napoleon, Spring Arbor, Columbia Police Departments, $650.00. Now that the county does not have animal control officers, we have committed to local police departments the purchase of special equipment needed to help in the safe and quick capture and/or rescue of animals that are loose in the community. To make it safer for the animal as well as the officers we used this money to purchase heavy duty gloves, leashes and cages as requested by the departments. (We outfitted the Jackson City Police with equipment last year at their request.)
June 2015: Jackson County Animal Shelter, $2,250. Friends has agreed to purchase a Universal Extended Stick Reader which is microchip scanner on a long wand. Many animals are stressed when they come into the shelter and it can be difficult to get close to them to check for microchip identification. This wand makes it safer for the staff and reduces the stress of the animals. We also will be purchasing special fenced covers for five of the dog cages in the kennels to discourage the doggies that want to climb out of their enclosures! Anything we can do to keep animals safe and out of harms way makes Friends happy to work hard to raise the money for these special furry ones.
June 2015: Barkley and LuLu Council for Animal Welfare is a new non-profit in the Jackson area which concentrates on offering spay and neuter assistance to those who can not afford it for their cats. They work closely with the Jackson Cat Project. Friends donated $2,000 to this wonderful organization to help fund their spay/neuter projects as well as assist in the cost of special surgeries.
June 2015: Equestria Horse Rescue & Sanctuary, Inc., $1,000. We are excited about the addition of a second new non-profit who recently got their status in Jackson County. Equestra specializes in the care and rescue of horses that had been seized by local police or for sale for slaughter. This loving volunteer group has cared for horses for many years (prior to their non-profit status) and now due to their new status we were able to make our first donation to purchase hay for their horses. (Their bill for hay right now is over $700 a month!)
June 2015: Ell Dwe Koda, $500. This is another one of our counties wonderful, small non-profit organizations which specializes in the care of abused and homeless farm animals. We gave them this money to assist in the cost of feed for their animals.
June 2015: Jackson County Animal Shelter, $1,200 for a short-term spay/neuter program where we will be paying for shelter animals to be spayed or neutered at Cascades Humane Society due to their veterinarian temporarily postponing surgeries. We wish Dr. Cathy Anderson a quick and smooth recovery from an unfortunate accident where she broke her arm. All the doggies at the county shelter have the same wish for Dr. Cathy- HEAL!
June 2015: Jackson County Animal Shelter, $200. The shelter has a wonderful fenced outdoor play area for their dogs but the way it was constructed there are a few areas that are open where a small dog could slip through. Friends has allocated this money so supplies can be purchased to block up the open areas and make it a safer playground for the furry little ones.
May 2015: PAWS Pet Rescue, $2,000.00. Since June, 2012, Friends has been financing the purchase of extra medicines for the Jackson County Animal Shelter, that otherwise might not have taken place due to lack of county funding. By donating this money to PAWS, the shelter is able to purchase the medicines at more economical veterinarian prices. Countless dogs have been treated and cured of heartworm disease, which they contracted prior to their arrival at the shelter, and hundreds of cats have been treated with medicine to help prevent respiratory problems. Thanks to this program, the shelter animals can remain more healthy as they await their new homes. Since the beginning of this program, Friends has donated $21,500.00 for these medicines.
May 2015: Jackson County Animal Shelter, $668.00. It was requested that Friends purchase a camera security system for the county shelter. This is a little luxury that would not have been in their budget and we were happy to purchase this to help monitor the shelter should a situation arise that needed attention.
May 2015: Jackson County Animal Shelter, $7,500.00. Money from the 2014 Fall Golfing event was used to purchase and install outdoor fencing at the shelter as well as remodeling in a portion of the cat room. Enough money had been raised from this event to build wonderful cat condos to give the feline residents more room to roam and socialize. Do stop at the shelter when you have the time and take at look at this wonderful set up for the cats.
April 2015: Jackson County Animal Shelter, $211.00. Videos on safe and humane animal handling were purchased for viewing by the shelter volunteers and personnel with money from our yearly bowling event. Pictures speak a thousand words and these videos will be a perfect way to help new people at the shelter to see the best way to handle the furry residents.
February 2015: Jackson County Animal Shelter, $3,000.00. Friends has established a special fund at our local animal shelter to assist in paying the costs of spay/neuter when a pet owner comes in to surrender their pet. Many times the surrender has come about as they can not afford to sterilize their pet and it has resulted in unwanted pregnancies. The shelter can easily become overcrowded but thanks to our funding, in many cases the owner is willing to keep their pet if it has been sterilized. While we can't afford to do this for everyone, we continue to fund this plan knowing that with each spay/neuter that is performed, many unwanted animals will not be born to roam the countryside or fill our shelters. (Due to the costs and the problem with feral cats in the area, most of the sterilizations have been for cats and kittens.) If you would like to help us beat the problem of overpopulation of unwanted animals in the Jackson area, please feel free to make a donation and label it "spay/neuter program" and we will be sure that it goes to the proper place.
February 2015: Friends donated $1,000.00 to PAWS Pet Rescue to purchase medicines for the animals at the Jackson County Animal Shelter. Due to necessary budget cuts in the county, donations such as this are very helpful when many animals arrive at the shelter needing treatment. The most significant result of our funding for medicines has resulted in many dogs who arrived at the shelter with heartworm disease were given the chance of a healthy life. Thanks to treatments and TLC of the staff at the shelter there have been many wonderful stories of these dogs being treated, cured and then adopted into loving homes. Please help us educate our community on the benefits of prevention of heartworm disease by monthly medicine prescribed by veterinarians!
February 2015: $540.00 was donated to purchase a Label Printer and labels to be used in the medical area of the Jackson County Animal Shelter. This donation also included the purchase of a medical injection pole (to be able to inject animals with vaccinations if they are skittish) as well as a cat net to assist the staff if an animal is frightened. Many animals are afraid when they are first put in new surroundings and these tools are valuable for the safety of the staff as well as the furry ones.
March 2015: $500.00 donated to WILDSIDE Rehabilitation Center which is a non-profit organization who provides care and treatment for injured, ill and orphaned wildlife. Jackson County has benefitted from their services many times over the years and Friends is pleased to be able to help support them as they care for these needy wild animals. They will be using these funds to purchase a new exam light and diagnostic set-ophthalmoscope/otoscope.
March 2015: Starry Skies Equine Rescue & Sanctuary- $500.00. The mission of Starry Skies is to eliminate the causes of equine suffering through educational community outreach as well as to care for abandoned, neglected and abused horses. Jackson County is lucky to be included in the area serviced by this wonderful non-profit organization. Many of their horses are acquired from Police Departments who have to seize an animal that is in serious trouble. Friends is grateful that this group of wonderful people exists and that they care so much about the larger animals that need their help. The money from this donation will be used to purchase feed and special grain for the horses in their care.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
January 2014: Faerie Tales Cat Rescue Group $450.00 to purchase vaccines to help prepare their kitties to be adopted into loving homes.
$150 to be used towards medical bills .
March 2014: Friends donated $500.00 to "Wildside", a non profit organization dedicated to caring for injured, sick, and orphaned wildlife such as owls, hawks, opossums, and squirrels. Their goal is to give TLC to the wild animals in need and then release them back to nature once they are healthy and able to survive on their own. Wildside is in need of a new generator (to power incubators and to keep the temperature at their facility proper for the animals, etc.) so our donation has been designated to go towards this purchase.
April 2014: We are thrilled to announce that Friends found an anonymous animal lover who was willing to finance the purchase and installation of a commercial washer and dryer set for the Jackson County Animal Shelter! When Friends first found out in Feb. that the shelter was in desperate need of a new washer and dryer (they were using an old residential set that could not keep up with the amount of laundry they were doing) one of our board members decided to look into the cost of a larger, commercial set. Since new sets cost upwards of $21,000 we were financially unable to help them. Thanks to an anonymous donor, on April 28th, their dryer was delivered and it is now up and running! Prior to the delivery, the shelter had to do some remodeling in addition to knocking out part of a wall in the laundry room to accommodate the giant dryer- but they were more than happy to do it! Their new commercial washer will be delivered in the near future. Thanks to this extremely generous donor, the county animal shelter staff will be able to keep up with the never- ending laundry chores. Now their furry residents will have clean fluffy towels and mini-quilts (made and donated by members of the Pieces And Patches Quilt Guild of Jackson) to keep them comfortable as they await their forever homes.
May 2014: Ell Dwe Koda Animal Sanctuary, $4,279 Our 4th annual Wine Tasting/Food Pairing event on May 2nd had a great turnout of guests again this year. Friends introduced the nonprofit group "Ell Dwe Koda Animal Sanctuary" and donated the majority of the money raised from this event to them. Thanks to all who participated! See some pictures of our guests enjoying the party under the "photos" section.
June 2014: Jackson City Police received a gift of Elk-hide gloves, catch poles, portable cages, and two types of leashes for every patrol car, valued at more than $800.00. These items will be used to assist the officers in safely capturing injured or lost animals for transport to our local shelter. Now that the county no longer has animal control officers, Friends could see the need in helping our local officers by purchasing this equipment.
June 2014: Jackson County Animal Shelter $3,095 for the purchase of a new autoclave (instrument sterilizer) for their surgical suite.
June 2014: Jackson County Animal Shelter $1,000 This money will be put in a special fund to help with spay/neuters, as approved by the staff, of dogs and cats that reside in low income situations.
June 2014: PAWS Pet Rescue $350 to pay for six live animal traps as needed by the rescue group.
June 2014: PAWS Pet Rescue/Jackson County Animal Shelter $2,500 to be used to purchase medicines needed for shelter animals such as heartworm treatment in dogs and upper respiratory treatments for cats. Many medicines are not provided for by the county so Friends donates this money to treat sick animals that might otherwise have had to be euthanized. They can now be treated, cured and put up for adoption. To date Friends has donated $13,500 for medicine for the animals at our local shelter. Please go to our "photo" section to see some of the animals that have benefited from our gift of medicines.
June 2014: Cascades Humane Society $1,500 In addition to the donations listed above for June 2014, our bowling event raised enough money to make several donations to the Cascades Humane Society. They needed $350.00 to buy supplies for a remodeling job in their feral cat holding area to help soundproof the room. (Dogs waking up from surgery in the next room were barking and upsetting the cats.) Dr. Wendy Serino also requested $150.00 to purchase two recirculating water pads to use for animals during surgery. In addition to these donations, Friends gave CHS $1,000.00 to purchase medicine for heartworm positive dogs so they can be treated and cured of this fatal disease.
July 2014: Pets For Veterans campaign. Twenty animals from our local shelter were chosen by our local veterans to go to their new, loving homes! Our cost was just over $1,800 but we were thrilled to hear of so many happy endings.
August 2014: Friends purchased 10 sturdy, plastic cage/animal carriers to be used to transport cats back and forth from the Jackson County Animal Shelter to Baker College. The college has a wonderful Vet Tech program where the students learn from veterinarians how to perform wellness exams on the animals. No animals are harmed in any way with this program but they receive excellent care and lots of love and attention as the students get hands on experience with treating the felines. In addition to the carriers, one of our board members made custom fit fabric covers for the carriers that would be used during transport. The covers will help to keep the animals more calm during their rides back and forth from the shelter and the college.
September 2014: Friends donated $2,500 to the Jackson County Animal Shelter to help them to continue their free spay/neuter program for animals that were going to be surrendered to the shelter. If the responsible party was willing to take the animals back home and give them a loving home, the shelter will spay/neuter the animal so it will not end up homeless. This grant from Friends has made a huge difference in the population of animals at the shelter.
September 2014: Thanks to the success of our first annual Golf Outing on Sept., 13th, over $7,500 was raised to benefit the Jackson County Animal Shelter. Renovations are being made to the cat rooms as well as other improvements being made to the shelter to help the animals. If you stop in the shelter, ask to see the newest renovations that are ongoing at this time!
November 2014: Our pets for vets program was another happy success with a total of 16 dogs and cats being adopted by our local veterans. Friends sponsored the adoptions and paid $1,591.00 to make them happen. We're so pleased that more animals from the Jackson County Animal Shelter have found new, loving homes!
November, 2014: Friends Of The Animals, along with a very generous donation from an anonymous Grantor, sponsored the Jackson Cat Project which was held on November 23, 2014. This project was done by veterinarians who generously donated their time and talent along with a multitude of volunteers who helped make this event happen. This year 100 cats who are owned by low income families were spayed or neutered!!! The cost for this Project was a little over $2,500.00 The Jackson Cat Project plans to have a similar spay/neuter day in May of 2015.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our organization is very excited about our relationship with the Jackson County Animal Shelter.
Thanks to our Bowling and Craft-A-Rama events in 2012 we funded the $8,600 renovation to their puppy room. The renovations are now complete and the puppies are enjoying a new tile floor as well as new stainless steel panels that replaced kennel equipment which was in poor condition.
In addition, here is a list of donations "Friends" has made over the past 2+ years- thanks to the hard work of our members, volunteers and fund raising events:
May 2011 Aware Shelter Fund $3,297
October 2011 Cascades Humane Society $4,187
October 2011 Forgotten Feline Program (a program through Cascades which supports spay/neuter of feral cats) $1,000
January 2012 Forgotten Feline Program, CHS $250
May 2012 Faerie Tales Cat Rescue Group $2,500 to set up a spay/neuter program.
June 2012 Jackson County Animal Shelter $5,000 down for puppy room renovations. We also gave them $500 to be used for special
programs to help with adoptions from their facility. (Ultimately they used this money for a very successful week-long radio campaign
in November, 2012 with WKHM-FM / WKHM-AM / WIBM-AM radio which resulted in MANY successful dog and cat adoptions!)
June 2012 PAWS Pet Rescue $3,000 for medicine used to treat animals at the Jackson County Animal Shelter for respiratory problems in cats
and heart worm disease in dogs.
Winter 2012 Balance of the funds for the puppy room remodel at the Jackson County Animal Shelter will be paid once the remodel is finished.
$3,600
November 2012 PAWS Pet Rescue $2,000 for more medicines to successfully treat animals at the Jackson County Animal Shelter to make them
healthy and ready for adoption. (For more on these animals, be sure to click on our "Photos" tab above.)
December 2012 We will be paying for animal adoptions from the Jackson County Animal Shelter for Veteran's who participated in our "Pets For
Veterans" program during this month. Due to the overwhelming response, vouchers have been offered for Veteran's to visit the shelter
up until Jan. 23, 2013 to find a pet, as long as our funds are still available. We do not have the totals yet for this program but we have
allocated $3,000 to be used for the adoption and county license costs as well as $300 spent on advertising this event. UPDATE: During
dates of the event, 7 dogs and 4 cats found loving homes with local veterans! (Check out some photos on the "photos" tab above.)
April 2013 PAWS Pet Rescue received $2,000 to be used to purchase additional medicines to treat animals at the Jackson County Animal Shelter.
The $7,000 we gave them in 2012 was depleted by the beginning of 2013 but many, many animals were treated and made well enough
to be adopted into loving homes!
April 2013 Last Day Dog Rescue, a non-profit organization who rescues animals that may have otherwise been euthanized (due to
serious illness, injury, or most sad of all, overcrowding) received a donation of $500 from Friends to help with expenses
used for animals from the Jackson area.
April 2013 Friends approved the purchase of a special wet/dry vacuum cleaner recommended for heavy-duty usage in dog kennels at a cost of
$990.00 to be used at the Jackson County Animal Shelter. This will help the furry residents stay healthy and ready for adoption.
May 2013 A check for $6,000 was presented to the director of the Jackson County Animal Shelter at our wine tasting event on May 17th. Thanks
to these additional funds, (to be added to $10,000 from their budget) they will be able to start the process of installing a badly needed
upgrade to their drainage system in their dog kennel areas. This new enclosed system will keep the cages cleaner and more importantly
make a healthier living area for their furry residents. The staff at the shelter is thrilled that we were able to provide the balance of the
money needed to get this big project underway. We are very excited to know that our hard work can be rewarded with the knowledge
that the animals will have a healthier and happier place to live while they wait for their new families to pick them to go
to their new homes! Please remember to visit our local shelter if you plan to add a new furry-one to your family!
June 2013 Friends wrote a check to PAWS Pet Rescue for $1,100 which will be used to purchase medical supplies (four surgical packs at a cost of
$275 each) to help complete a surgery suite off-site from the animal shelter. This suite will allow their veterinarian to complete more
spay/neuter procedures on animals that will be going into foster care and new forever homes.
June 2013 Thanks to our 3rd Annual Wine Tasting/Food Pairing party at Sandhill Crane Vineyards in May, we were able to donate $2,000 to PAWS
Pet Rescue. We'd like to thank all the people who participated in our event as well as to those who made generous offers on our silent
auction items. A great time was had by all! We are certain that PAWS will put this money to good use to help needy animals.
June 2013 Friends set up a $500 fund at a local animal hospital which will be used by the Jackson County Animal Shelter when services need to
be provided for an animal when the shelter vet is not available. Previously the bills were paid by the animal shelter and it was putting a
strain on their already tight budget. We felt this would be a good way to provide good medical care for the shelter animals while lifting
a financial burden.
June 2013 A $500 donation was made to the local non-profit organization "Love From Louie." This money will be used to assist economically
disadvantaged pet owners who need assistance with medical bills for their animal(s).
June 2013 Friends donated $2,000 to the Jackson County Animal Shelter to fund the start of their new pilot program of spay and neuter of
cats and kittens in the Jackson Community. Their plan is to target residential areas (such as mobile home parks) that have a high
re-occurrence rate of unwanted cat populations. This program has the potential to make an enormous difference in the over population
of unwanted and feral cats in our community.
July 2013 Our second "Pets For Veterans" was held from July 1- 17th. Please see the notes above on the program listed under December, 2012.
Sept. 2013 PAWS Pet Rescue will be teaching children how to care for and train their family pet(s) with visits to the Jackson County Animal Shelter.
We donated $100.00 to be used to purchase educational booklets with illustrations and a lot of information to be handed out during
these classes. We feel it is very important to educate young people on how to be responsible pet owners so they will continue the cycle
and become adults who will pass this valuable information on to their children.
Nov. 2013 Friends presented a check in the amount of $4,000 to PAWS Pet Rescue to be used for the purchase of medicines for animals at the
Jackson County Animal Shelter. A large majority of the money is used to treat and cure dogs with heart worm disease. So many dogs
have been saved and adopted out into loving homes thanks to their treatment. Many cats and kittens have also benefited from medicines
that treat upper respiratory problems. While all the animals at the shelter are well cared for, money is desperately needed to pay for
medicines not covered by County funding.
Nov. 2013 We have recently supported a new non-profit animal organization by giving a donation of $500.00 to the Ell Dwe Koda Animal Sanctuary,
located in Jackson. This wonderful group provides food, shelter and love to homeless farm animals. They also have an adoption program
to help find homes for their animal residents. The money we donated will be used to purchase and store 125 bales of hay which will help
feed their animals during the winter months.
December 2013 Five cats and seven dogs from the Jackson County Animal Shelter found new, forever homes thanks to our recent Pets For Veterans
event held in November. Friends will be paying the adoption fees which totaled $1,040, to thank our local veterans for their service to
our country. We're delighted that Friends had a helping hand in matching these deserving veterans with new best friends.

A special THANK YOU goes out to Kroger and all of you who have participated in the Kroger Rewards Program. They have recently notified us that another check is on the way. The most recent quarter, from 8/1/13 - 10/31/13 you have helped us to earn a whopping $181.00!! Thank you!
