Our organization came up with a plan which would reunite lost dogs with their owners while saving valuable time for our police officers.
  • Thanks to our plan and the cooperation of the Jackson County Treasurers Office, the County computer programmers and the Jackson County
Sheriffs Department, a lost animal can get home faster, the police department saves time and the county saves money.  If a police officer finds a lost dog with no ID but it has a Jackson County license, they can now have access to owner information through 911.  Previous to this arrangement, officers had to go to the sheriffs office, get the key to the animal shelter (if it was after hours) transport the dog to the shelter and then return the key to the sheriffs office.  Valuable patrol time was lost and the animal had to be housed at the shelter. This process was not ideal for the animal and it cost the taxpayers money.  While private citizens cannot personally get this information, they can still report a license number of a "found" dog to 911. The 911 operators may then contact the owners so they can be reunited with their lost pets. This is a win/win situation for everyone concerned!

Friends has offered our "Pets For Veterans" program eight times in the past few years where we have paid for the adoption fees of one dog or up to two cats (at the Jackson County Animal Shelter) for a local veteran during our designated dates. So far qualified veterans have adopted 67 dogs and 36 cats and taken them to their loving, permanent homes.  That's a total of 88 successful adoptions! (Some of our veterans and their new best friends are featured in our photo section. If  you would like to view them please click on the "photo" button above.) We are grateful for their service to our country and we also thank our supporters who have helped to finance this program with their donations.
